Daily brief: Sunday 18 October 2026

A record-sized Patch Tuesday with an exploited Windows zero-day, new Exchange updates, GPT-6 in ChatGPT, new Claude models, and Cisco putting AI agents into meetings.

Cybersecurity

October Patch Tuesday is the biggest ever, with an exploited zero-day

Microsoft's October 2026 updates fix more than 1,400 vulnerabilities (reports count between 1,411 and 1,414, depending on how they're tallied), with about 80 rated critical. One zero-day, CVE-2026-96951, is being actively exploited. It's a Windows Shell flaw that lets a downloaded file skip the Mark of the Web security warning, and CISA has added it to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities list. A second zero-day, CVE-2026-108398 in .NET Framework, was publicly known but isn't reported as exploited.

Why it matters for IT: The critical fixes include DHCP Server, Remote Desktop Services, Active Directory Domain Services and Exchange Server, so servers matter as much as laptops this month. Push the updates to a pilot group first, then everyone, and check your RMM patch report for machines that didn't install.

Microsoft

October security updates for on-premises Exchange Server are out

Microsoft's Exchange team has published the October 2026 security updates for on-premises Exchange Server. This month's Patch Tuesday also lists seven Exchange Server vulnerabilities.

Why it matters for IT: Even clients who are mostly in the cloud often keep one Exchange server for hybrid management. Check which build it's on, run Microsoft's Exchange Health Checker script, and install the update in a maintenance window. Check Microsoft's post for exactly which versions are covered.

OpenAI

GPT-6 arrives in ChatGPT with 'Intelligent UI'

OpenAI launched GPT-6 in ChatGPT on 7 October. Its new Intelligent UI lets answers include charts, buttons, forms and small interactive tools, not just text. Paid plans got it first and free users the next day. On Enterprise plans, access depends on the workplace's admin settings.

Why it matters for IT: Expect users to ask for it. If a client uses ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, review the admin and data controls before new features are switched on, the same as for any new app.

Claude

Claude Haiku 5.5 launches and Opus 5.5 fast mode goes live

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, its fast, low-cost model, on 7 October with a 1 million token context window. On 15 October, fast mode for Claude Opus 5.5 left research preview and became available on Microsoft Foundry too. Sonnet 4.5 will be retired from the Claude API on 30 November 2026.

Why it matters for IT: If any client tool or script calls an older model by name, plan the switch now. Once a model is retired, requests to it fail, and to users it simply looks like an app has broken.

Cisco

Cisco puts AI agents into Webex meetings, and Google Meet onto Cisco room kit

At WebexOne on 7 October, Cisco announced Claude in Webex, plus AI agents that can be invited into spaces, meetings and calls to carry out multi-step work. It also announced an integration with OpenAI. RoomOS 27, due in November, adds native Google Meet support to Cisco meeting-room devices, alongside Webex, Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

Why it matters for IT: Clients with Cisco room systems will be able to join Teams, Zoom and Google Meet calls from the same room. AI agents in meetings will also need a clear policy on what they can hear, record and access.

Cisco

Cisco and NVIDIA plan faster optics for AI data centres

At the OCP Global Summit on 12 October, Cisco and NVIDIA said they will create an open specification for a new pluggable optic running at 400 Gb/s per lane. Cisco also opened customer sampling of its 102.4 Tbps Silicon One G300 chip, and said Microsoft has its P200-based systems in production.

Why it matters for IT: This is data-centre kit, not something a small business will buy. It shows where networking investment is going right now: the links between AI systems.
